The USDA NASS monitors the impact of natural disasters on US agriculture in near real-time using remotely sensed data and geospatial techniques. The first test case is detailed in the following papers <https://www.nass.usda.gov/Research_and_Science/Disaster-Analysis/2018/Hurricane-Michael/Flood_Monitoring_Methodology_Paper.pdf> and <https://www.nass.usda.gov/Research_and_Science/Cropland/docs/Boryan_IGARSS2018%20_Flood.pdf>.

Description:
Abstract:
Hurricane Florence struck areas of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, United States from September 14 to 19, 2018. The United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) responded to inquiries regarding the extent of flooding from Hurricane Florence over agricultural land in near real-time. Consequently, a recently developed flood mapping procedure, based on Copernicus Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar data and the NASS Cropland Data Layer, was implemented in response to the flood event. The data, maps, and reports available on the official website illustrate and estimate the extent of inundation over cropland and pasture based on this analysis. The crop inundation raster layer is publically available for download at <https://www.nass.usda.gov/Research_and_Science/Disaster-Analysis/>. These data are not official NASS estimates.
Purpose:
Agricultural disaster monitoring is important for food security and economic stability. Using remotely sensed data and geospatial techniques provides an additional tool for the USDA NASS to use in evaluating a disaster's impact on US agriculture.
